A young girl was snatched into the frigid waters of a pier in Richmond, British Columbia by a sea lion. The girl and her family were feeding bread to the seal lion, amused by how close they were able to get to the animal. When the girl sat up on the barrier to get a better look, the seal suddenly leaped out of the water, latching and pulling the girl into the pier by the seat of her dress.
The girl’s elder relative dove into the water without hesitation, and everyone was able to walk away from the incident unharmed – including the sea lion.
Sea lion attacks aren’t a new phenomenon. The most recent attack was in 2015 when San Diego fisherman Dan Carlin was pulled into the water and violently assaulted by a hungry sea lion. He sustained severe injuries, causing him to be hospitalized for 2 days.
Sea lions have been used extensively as animals in various entertainment industries. However, it is important to distinguish trained animals from those found in the wild. Always remember avoid feeding unfamiliar animals and to always keep a safe distance, as their behavior can evidently be very unpredictable.
